Seeking to Protect the Kaibab Squirrel

The Friends of the Kaibab Squirrel (FKS) is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to the perpetuation and long term survival of the Kaibab Squirrel (Sciurus alberti kaibabensis) and membership is free. Please go to the Support tab to find out more about membership and how you can join.

This delightful squirrel is a subspecies of the more common Aberts squirrel (Sciurus alberti alberti). The habitat of the Aberts squirrel extends across central Arizona, through West central New Mexico to Southwest Colorado and Southeast Utah, an area of over 5000 square miles. In contrast, the Kaibab Squirrel's habitat is confined to the Ponderosa pine forest type of the Kaibab Plateau north of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, an area of about 638 square miles.

With a dark body and bright, white tail (its distinguishing characteristic) the Kaibab Squirrel is unique and beautiful.
